Usually anterior knee pain, especially kneecap pain, is made much worse by hyperflexion of the knee, under load. In other words, if your kneecap is tender or painful, bending it while supporting a weight, as when climbing stairs, is likely to make it much worse. Oddly enough, though, the seiza position relieves that pain, even though the knee is maximally bent. Once you get used to it, the position is actually comfortable. And that doesn’t seem to make sense. The answer to this apparent paradox, however, lies in the relevant anatomy of the patellofemoral joint.

If you look at the lower end of a human thigh bone, or femur, you will see that the weight bearing area, the articular surface, is divided into inner and outer condyles (curved, bean-shaped segments) by an arch-shaped “open area,” called the intercondylar notch (see Figure 1). This area is where the cruciate ligaments are attached. Now, just superior to this notch is an angled groove in the front of the lower femur, in which the kneecap rides, when the knee is bent, like a train on its tracks. This groove or valley between the condyles is called the trochlea. Like the back surface of the patella (kneecap), it’s coated with a layer of articular cartilage.

When the knee is bent, the kneecap rides along within the trochlea and compression forces the cartilage of the kneecap down against the cartilage of the trochlea. The more weight or resistance that’s applied to the knee, the more pressure compresses the kneecap into the groove. When the cartilage is diseased, softened or fragmented (chondromalacia patellae, or arthritis), its protective function is compromised. In this case, the pressure gets through the cartilage into the bone, where it stimulates the nerves in the bone and is perceived as pain.

When the knee is in seiza position, however, it flexes even beyond that point, so the kneecap literally “runs out of track,” leaves the confines of the trochlea groove and is pulled beyond the bone, down into the bare area of the intercondylar notch, where there is no firm opposing surface (Figure 2). Therefore, in this position, the patella resides in an interval which is free of compression and as a result is pain-free, despite the extreme flexion of the knee.

“Understanding dehydration will empower you to become much healthier and you will be able to become your own healer.”
“The information on dehydration is ground-breaking. The explanation I have been able to put together will educate the public about dehydration. And basically it will turn everyone into a healer of their own bodies. And they are in turn become healers for others around them. This is how information is spread so far.”
- A New Medical Discovery

“Medical professionals of today do not understand the vital roles of water in the human body. Medications are palliatives. They are not designed to cure the degenerative disease of the human body.
The current practice of clinical medicine is based on the application of pharmacological chemistry to the human body. At the medical school, more than six hundred teaching hours are allocated to the use of pharmaceutical products. Only a few hours are allocated to instructions on diet and nutrition.
The simple true is that dehydration can cause diseases. Everyone knows that water is good for the body. They seem not to know how essential it is to one’s well-being. They do not know what happens to the body if it does not receive its daily need of water.”
“We misinterpret thirst signals as pain, and treat them with drugs which silence instead of cure the problem. Because dehydration eventually causes loss of some functions, the various signals given by water distribution system regulators during severe and lasting dehydration have been translated as indicators of unknown disease conditions of the body. I discovered that histamine is a vital chemical messenger in the brain. Histamine has a most important function not written about in medical textbooks. It is in charge of water intake and drought management in the body. It is less active when the body is fully hydrated, and becomes increasingly active when the body becomes dehydrated.
To hush the body’s call for water by masking the symptoms with drugs is like turning out the dashboard light that signal us that our car is about to overheat.”
“Every function inside the body is regulated by and depends on water. Water must be available to carry vital elements, oxygen, hormones, and chemical massages to all parts of the body. Without sufficient water to wet all parts equally, some more remote parts of the body will not receive the vital elements that water supplies. Without sufficient water to constantly wet all parts, your body’s drought-management system kicks into action. The histamine-directed chemical messenger systems are activated to arrange a new, low quota of water for the drought-stricken area. When histamine and its subordinate “drought managers” come across pain-sensing nerves, they cause pain. This is why dehydration produces pain as its first alarm signal. If the dehydration persists and is not corrected naturally with water, it becomes symptom-producing and, in time, develops into a disease condition.”
- Your Body’s Many Cries for Water

“The human body is composed of 25 percent solid matter and 75 percent water. Brian tissue is 85 percent water. When we starve body cells of water, they start to complain – and set up may adverse reactions.”
“Dry mouth is not the only sign of dehydration and waiting to get thirty is wrong. Pain in the body is a crisis call of the body for water. Thirst should be prevented. When body does not receive enough water and you have pain that is a sign of dehydration.”
“Chronic pain of the body which cannot easily be explained as injuries or infection should first and foremost be interpreted as signal of chronic water shortage in the area where the pain is registered. These pain signals should first be considered and excluded as primary indicators for dehydration of the body before any other complicated procedures are forced on the patient.”
“Once you understand how the human body works, the wonderful simplicity of water as a free and permanently available choice of medication for so many health problem begins to make sense.”
“I have to abandon some of my past learning and build a new landscape for the science of medicine in the future. Medicine has based its understanding that it is a solid matter in the body that regulates all functions of the body. I have explained scientifically at the molecular level that it is water that regulates all functions of the body including functions of solid matter. Without water, this solid matter is absolutely useless. It is water that energize and activates the solid matter. 75 percent of our bodies are composed of water. The brain is 85 percent water. Now if the solid matter is not active without water therefore water is more important than solid matter. And if you don’t take enough of water then some function of the body will begin to suffer. I am talking about system disturbance – dehydration produces multi-system upheaval.”
“This is new information based on science. It is simple information. The origin, design, of the human body is made on simple events. Integrating these simple events has producing an integrated body but the foundation of it is simplicity is based on water. Water is what it needs. The medical community has spent 100 years of money and time researching the solid matter. If they spent a quarter as much time and one tenth as much money on investigating dehydration, we will become a much healthier nation.”
- Interview with PhenomeNews

The human body is about 75 percent water and 25percent solid matter. The brain is said to be 85 percent water and is extremely sensitive to any dehydration or depletion of its water content. The brain is bathed constantly in salty cerebrospinal fluid. The water content of the body is called the solvent, and the solid matter that is dissolved in the water is called the solute.
It is water (solvent) that regulates all the functions of the body, including the action of all the solid (solutes) that water carries around.

The role of water in the body of all living species, human included, has not changed since the earliest creation of life in water. When life on land became an objective – the stressful adventure beyond – a gradually refined body-water-preservation system and drought-management system had to be created. In other words, the body began to adapt to transient dehydration. Over time, this drought – management process became permanent – and currently exists in the body of modern humans.
When human body are under stress or confronting situations that may be perceived as stressful, the physiological translation of that stress reflects a water-dwelling species ventured beyond their water supply. A similar process for rationing water reserves and an anticipated limited future supply becomes the responsibility of a complex system in the body. This multi-system water-distribution process remains in operation until the body receives unmistakable signals that it has once more gained access to an adequate water supply.

The chemical understanding of the human body brought about an almost total concentration of research into the detailed molecular composition and minute fluctuation of the solid matter in the body. Thus a chemical-pharmaceutical perception of human body too shape, resulting gin the development of the “medical-industrial system.” Adherence to the understanding that it is primarily the body solid composition that governs all its functions has produced much misinformation and has contribute to the present chaotic status of medicine.
The Flaw in the above approach to understanding the body lies in the fact that even with all our amassed knowledge, the human body is still an almost unknown structure. We know no more than 10 percent of how the body functions and it is integrated chemically.

The whole structure of modern medicine is built on the pitifully flawed premise that dry mouth is the only sign of dehydration. This false premise is responsible for the lack of understanding about various painful health problems that result in premature death to many millions of people.
Water is too important to the body to signal its shortage only through the experience of a dry mouth. The human body has many other sophisticated signals to indicate when it is short of water. The body can suffer from deep dehydration with-out showing a dry mouth. Dehydration produces severe symptoms, even to the point of causing life-threatening crises.
Dry mouth is one of the very last indicators of dehydration of the body. By the time dry mouth becomes an indicator of water shortage; many delicate functions of the body have been shut down and prepared for deletion. This is exactly how the aging process is established – through a loss of enzyme function. A dehydrated body loses sophistication and versatility.

We have always looked for a drug solution to throw at a health concern. We have not succeeded at limiting these health concerns; rather, we have constantly expanded the list and thrown more drugs at them. We have truly caused a costly chaos in the name of modern medicine, with no end in sight. We now have significant problems that beg urgent solutions.
The solutions to the present human-made and drug-industry-protected health problems of society can only be physiology-based. Understanding the molecular physiology of dehydration will restructure the future practice of clinical medicine. It will cause a fundamental paradigm change in the science of medicines. By showing the way to enhance the natural healing powers of the body within the discipline of physiology, the pharmaceutical approach to our present health problems will be completely replaced. The primary focus in medicine will become disease prevention rather than its protracted, cost-intensive, and invasive treatment protocols.

Dr. Geoff Tabin is changing lives: A Vision for Eliminating Blindness with Innovation. I just read a powerful story in the December issue of National Geographic Adventure magazine. A story that has caused me to shift my thinking about a lot of things. You can read the short version below, or you can click the link above to read the whole thing. Dr. Geoff Tabin was the 4th person to ever climb the Seven Summits, the tallest mountain in every continent. Very few people have done this and it is a very impressive feat. But, it’s a personal feat. It does not really improve anybody else’s lives. It’s kind of like my competing in the Olympics. Sure, it might inspire a few people to work harder for their dreams and goals, but it’s mostly a personal goal. What’s incredible about Dr. Tabin is what he’s done since climbing the 7 Summits.

He found out that in 3rd world countries, most blindness is due to cataracts and through a simple 10 minute surgery he can give sight – and a life, back to a blind person. And, he can do it for about $20 per surgery.

Dr. Tabin goes to places like Tibet, or Ethiopia, sets up a clinic, and with the help of several other doctors they perform hundreds of operations a week.

Get this, the life expectancy of a blind person in these places is one third the life expectancy of a person with vision, so by giving blind people sight, he’s not just improving their lives, he’s lengthening their lives and making them non-dependent on others and more productive.

As far as I’m concerned, Dr. Tabin is a hero.

His website has some really cool videos of what they do. By the way, their organization is rated extremely high in how they use funds people donate to them.

I may not be able to perform the operation, but at least I can feel good that I can help this humanitarian project in a small way.

David Oliver Relin is currently working on a new book, See How They Shine, about Tabin, Ruit, and the quest to cure preventable blindness. It will be published by Random House in the spring of 2011. For more information on the Himalayan Cataract Project, go to www.cureblindness.org

We all know that trans fats are horrible for your health right? But what if I told you that there is a specific type of trans fat that’s natural (not man-made) and actually helps you to lose fat faster and build lean muscle?

Well, check out the excerpt from my new program that I co-authored called “The Fat Burning Kitchen” below:

“…Not many people know this fact, but CLA is actually a natural form of trans fat, but it is FAR different than the artificial trans fats from hydrogenated oils that are so deadly and that you hear all of the negative information about. CLA is actually one of the only healthy trans fats in existence.

CLA is a natural form of healthy trans fat that occurs in the fat on the meat, and in the dairy from ruminant animals such as cattle, bison, deer, goats, sheep, kangaroo, etc. CLA in natural form has been shown to help in burning off abdominal fat and also maintaining or even building lean muscle.

Warning: do NOT use CLA supplements as they contain an artificially created form of CLA that is a different CLA isomer compared to the natural CLA isomer that’s found in meats and dairy from ruminant animals. The CLA isomer found in CLA supplements can have negative effects in the body and is more similar to an artificial trans fat. The only form of CLA is that going to benefit your health and help you to reduce body fat is the natural CLA isomers from grass-fed beef, bison, venison, etc or from grass-fed raw milk or cheeses.

Also, grass-fed meats and dairy contain 3-5x the CLA of grain fed meats, so avoid your typical grain-fed grocery store meats.

So that is the reason why I focused more on red meats such as grass-fed beef and bison during this 23-day cutting cycle instead of chicken, turkey, or fish — because the extra CLA can really help in accelerating fat loss and preserving lean muscle…”

Eight things we can do to improve health care without adding to the deficit. by John Mackay

“The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out
of other people’s money.”
—Margaret Thatcher

With a projected $1.8 trillion deficit for 2009, several trillions more in deficits projected over the next decade, and with both Medicare and Social Security entitlement spending about to ratchet up several notches over the next 15 years as Baby Boomers become eligible for both, we are rapidly running out of other people’s money. These deficits are simply not sustainable. They are either going to result in unprecedented new taxes and inflation, or they will bankrupt us.

While we clearly need health-care reform, the last thing our country needs is a massive new health-care entitlement that will create hundreds of billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us much closer to a government takeover of our health-care system. Instead, we should be trying to achieve reforms by moving in the opposite direction—toward less government control and more individual empowerment. Here are eight reforms that would greatly lower the cost of health care for everyone:

•?Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible health insurance plans and health savings accounts (HSAs). The combination of high-deductible health insurance and HSAs is one solution that could solve many of our health-care problems. For example, Whole Foods Market pays 100% of the premiums for all our team members who work 30 hours or more per week (about 89% of all team members) for our high-deductible health-insurance plan. We also provide up to $1,800 per year in additional health-care dollars through deposits into employees’ Personal Wellness Accounts to spend as they choose on their own health and wellness.

Money not spent in one year rolls over to the next and grows over time. Our team members therefore spend their own health-care dollars until the annual deductible is covered (about $2,500) and the insurance plan kicks in. This creates incentives to spend the first $2,500 more carefully. Our plan’s costs are much lower than typical health insurance, while providing a very high degree of worker satisfaction.

•?Equalize the tax laws so that employer-provided health insurance and individually owned health insurance have the same tax benefits. Now employer health insurance benefits are fully tax deductible, but individual health insurance is not. This is unfair.

•?Repeal all state laws which prevent insurance companies from competing across state lines. We should all have the legal right to purchase health insurance from any insurance company in any state and we should be able use that insurance wherever we live. Health insurance should be portable.

•?Repeal government mandates regarding what insurance companies must cover. These mandates have increased the cost of health insurance by billions of dollars. What is insured and what is not insured should be determined by individual customer preferences and not through special-interest lobbying.

•?Enact tort reform to end the ruinous lawsuits that force doctors to pay insurance costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. These costs are passed back to us through much higher prices for health care.

•?Make costs transparent so that consumers understand what health-care treatments cost. How many people know the total cost of their last doctor’s visit and how that total breaks down? What other goods or services do we buy without knowing how much they will cost us?

•?Enact Medicare reform. We need to face up to the actuarial fact that Medicare is heading towards bankruptcy and enact reforms that create greater patient empowerment, choice and responsibility.

•?Finally, revise tax forms to make it easier for individuals to make a voluntary, tax-deductible donation to help the millions of people who have no insurance and aren’t covered by Medicare, Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Many promoters of health-care reform believe that people have an intrinsic ethical right to health care—to equal access to doctors, medicines and hospitals. While all of us empathize with those who are sick, how can we say that all people have more of an intrinsic right to health care than they have to food or shelter?

Health care is a service that we all need, but just like food and shelter it is best provided through voluntary and mutually beneficial market exchanges. A careful reading of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution will not reveal any intrinsic right to health care, food or shelter. That’s because there isn’t any. This “right” has never existed in America

Even in countries like Canada and the U.K., there is no intrinsic right to health care. Rather, citizens in these countries are told by government bureaucrats what health-care treatments they are eligible to receive and when they can receive them. All countries with socialized medicine ration health care by forcing their citizens to wait in lines to receive scarce treatments.

Although Canada has a population smaller than California, 830,000 Canadians are currently waiting to be admitted to a hospital or to get treatment, according to a report last month in Investor’s Business Daily. In England, the waiting list is 1.8 million.

At Whole Foods we allow our team members to vote on what benefits they most want the company to fund. Our Canadian and British employees express their benefit preferences very clearly—they want supplemental health-care dollars that they can control and spend themselves without permission from their governments. Why would they want such additional health-care benefit dollars if they already have an “intrinsic right to health care”? The answer is clear—no such right truly exists in either Canada or the U.K.—or in any other country.

Rather than increase government spending and control, we need to address the root causes of poor health. This begins with the realization that every American adult is responsible for his or her own health.

Unfortunately many of our health-care problems are self-inflicted: two-thirds of Americans are now overweight and one-third are obese. Most of the diseases that kill us and account for about 70% of all health-care spending—heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and obesity—are mostly preventable through proper diet, exercise, not smoking, minimal alcohol consumption and other healthy lifestyle choices.

Recent scientific and medical evidence shows that a diet consisting of foods that are plant-based, nutrient dense and low-fat will help prevent and often reverse most degenerative diseases that kill us and are expensive to treat. We should be able to live largely disease-free lives until we are well into our 90s and even past 100 years of age.

Health-care reform is very important. Whatever reforms are enacted it is essential that they be financially responsible, and that we have the freedom to choose doctors and the health-care services that best suit our own unique set of lifestyle choices. We are all responsible for our own lives and our own health. We should take that responsibility very seriously and use our freedom to make wise lifestyle choices that will protect our health. Doing so will enrich our lives and will help create a vibrant and sustainable American society.

Mr. Mackey is co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market Inc.

“Our modern diet is processed and full of additives and other toxins,” he says. “Combine that with getting older and you throw off your body’s ‘fat signals.’ These signals tell your body how much fat to make and store.”

If you want to lose weight quickly and naturally, eat like a caveman, Dr. Sears says.

What did a caveman eat? Grass-fed meat. Organic vegetables (the ones that grow above ground, not tubers). And fruit.

Reduce or eliminate all foods invented after the invention of bronze. That includes lots of stuff the government and the food industry recommends, such as “whole grain” breads and “lite” fats.

Eating like a caveman isn’t all that easy, given the temptations that are out there. I still have my weekly McDonald’s because I need a synthetic food fix once in a while. And, boy, it tastes good! But I know that Dr. Sears’s advice is right on. So I do the best I can to heed it. Hope you do too.

You are about to explore a cutting edge technology. It is based on the principles of brainwave functions, the process of brainwave entrainment, the latest advances in psychoacoustic 3-D recording processes, and the newest research into a brainwave state called Gamma that has been recently added to the classic widely accepted brain state categories of Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.

THE GAMMA BRAINWAVE STORY

Each of these brainwaves has a specific frequency, and each is associated with a specific state of consciousness.
The advent of new technology however, recently led researchers at the University of California in San Diego to discover a brainwave pattern they hadn’t seen before. The frequency of this newly discovered brainwave, called GAMMA, was measured at 40 Hz (cycles per second). The researchers discovered that this new GAMMA brainwave pattern was associated with a neurological phenomenon called Binding. This is the process by which the brain gathers and integrates the information that arrives from all of our senses, binding them into a coherent whole. This synchronizes and coordinates all of our conscious perception, helping us to clarify the information and make sense of the world around us.
More recently Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s new $10 million W.M. Keck Laboratory for Functional Brain Imaging and Behavior, had the opportunity to test, through the cooperation of the Dalai Lama, the brain patterns of a group of Tibetan monks while they were in states of deep meditation. For this study the monks were asked to meditate on the idea of “loving compassion.”

Results showed the brainwaves activated in the brains of the monks in significantly different ways than those of the control group. Most importantly, the electrodes measured large amounts of GAMMA waves in the monks, and found that the movement of these waves through the brain was better organized and coordinated than in the control group.
In additional GAMMA studies, mental activities such as focus, memory, and learning have been associated with this same kind of neural activity in monks. GAMMA waves found in monks have also been associated with the knitting together of disparate brain circuits, associated with states of higher mental activity and higher awareness.
What this all means is that this newly discovered brainwave pattern –GAMMA- is associated with several powerful states of consciousness including:

· Deep Meditation
· Heightened perception and mental acuity
· A sense of connection with the world around you
· Deepened compassion and loving kindness
· Enhanced self-awareness
· Clarity of mind

By utilizing a collection of pioneering psychoacoustic processes that I have developed, including brainwave entrainment, specifically processed nature sounds, 3-D recording, and non-linear music, the Gamma Meditation System program can help you experience this powerful state of consciousness. For you to get the most out of this program, however, it is important to understand what brainwaves are and how they relate to various states of consciousness.

BRAINWAVES AND STATES OF MIND

During a normal day, we all moved through various states of consciousness. Sometimes we are awake and alert, other times we are meditative and relaxed, and usually we end our day in a state where we are asleep and dreaming. Each of these states has a unique pattern of brainwaves associated with it.

Brainwaves are electromagnetic waves produced by the electrical activity of the brain. These waves can be measured with a sensitive electronic instrument called an electroencephalogram, or EEG. The frequencies of these electrical waves are measured in cycles per second, or hertz (Hz). Brainwaves change frequencies based on neural activity within the brain and are closely tied to changes in states of mind or consciousness.

Measuring brainwaves show that our states of mind fall into various classes. The most commonly known are: Beta (30-13 Hz), Alpha (13-8 Hz), Theta (8-3.5 Hz), and Delta (3.5-0.5 Hz). Beta waves are associated with ordinary consciousness and linear, step-by-step thinking. Alpha waves are produced as your mind moves from the external to the internal world, such as when you close your eyes and relaxed deeply. Theta waves are associated with dreaming and creativity. Delta waves are the brainwaves that are produced during the deepest states of restorative sleep. It is now generally accepted that Gamma (30-85 Hz, centered at 40 Hz), is an additional category of brainwaves. Gamma waves are associated with states of expanded consciousness, deepened compassion, and heightened self-awareness.

BRAINWAVE ENTRAINMENT

The brain tends to match its own waves pulses to those of exterior sound pulses, a phenomenon known as “acoustic brainwave entrainment.” Research has shown that specific states of consciousness can be induced through hearing sound pulses that match the brainwave frequency of that particular state of mind. Based on this scientifically tested principle, inaudible sound frequency patterns are woven into every soundtrack on the Gamma Mediation System recording. When your brain senses these hidden pulses, your brainwaves will tend to match them, enhancing your ability to enter into a deeply meditative state.

The brainwave entrainment pulses woven into the Gamma Mediation System soundtrack are at a frequency of 40 Hz. These specific pulses will entrain your brainwaves to the GAMMA brainwave frequency.
Listening repeatedly over time, however, creates a “learned psychological response” in the nervous system. Anchoring this state with regular listening will train your brain to more easily access your deepest capacities and abilities whenever you need them.

Remember, this recording is not creating and specific state in your brain. It is merely enhancing your ability to more easily access a natural meditative state of consciousness. You should view it as “stacking the deck” in your favor.

NATURE SOUNDS FOR THE MIND

Although there are nature sounds on this recording, they are all processed in such a way that you may not “hear” them on a conscious level. Changing octaves, accelerating and slowing the sounds, and passing them through complex filters ensure that they will be recognized only by the unconscious mind. Electronically altering these natural sounds in this way can produce strong physical and psychological responses, and can increase your brain’s ability to experience a meditative state of mind more quickly and easily.

-DIMENSIONAL RECORDING PROCESSES

The music and nature sounds in this audio program are especially powerful because of the extraordinary three-dimensional recording techniques I use. Instead of recording sounds with only two microphones, resulting in a simple stereo effect, I record using several clinically developed 3-D microphones placed strategically on the body. These recordings authentically reproduce the environment of the sound and the interaction of sound waves with both the ears and the rest of the human body. As you listen, the sounds move around, above, below, and in some cases even seem to move trough your body.

THE MUSIC

As a clinical physician, researcher, musician, and explorer of spirit and consciousness, I have spent many years investigating techniques for using music and sound to enhance healing, creativity, learning, relaxation, meditation, and spiritual awakening. In that pursuit, I have explored and discovered brainwave states associated with various types of meditation and spiritual practices and created musical soundtracks to enhance those states of consciousness.

The type of music used to induce a deep meditative state must be different than anything normally associated with a regular musical soundtrack, so I created a new musical form for this meditative work. I call it “Non-Linear Music.” It’s a 3-D musical sound environment that allows the mind to become centered, quiet, and focused.

Add On this recording, I have also added thee sounds of Tibetan singing bowls played at various speeds. Some of these bowl sounds have been slowed to the point where they mimic what a 60-foot diameter bowl would sound like. I was inspired to use the Tibetan bowl sounds by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Buddhist monks who volunteered in some of the studies that helped us to understand the Gamma meditation mind state.

HOW TO USE THE GAMMA MEDITATION SYSTEM

To benefit fully from this recording, sit directly between your stereo speakers or use headphones. This will help you to take full advantage of the Psychoacoustic 3-D recording techniques.

TRACK 1: INNER MIND
This track is designed to help you connect with your inner world and enter a state of deep meditation, heightened self-awareness, and expanded consciousness. If you already use a specific meditation technique, listen to this soundtrack while you do your regular practice. It will help you move more deeply into a meditative state. Listening to this recording while doing yoga or other meditative exercise can deepen your experience. If you aren’t sure how to meditate, the simple instructions below may be helpful.

First, you want your body to be very comfortable. Wearing loose-fitting clothing, especially at your neckline, and taking off your shoes are both helpful. You will want to assume a position in which you will be comfortable for at least 30 minutes. This could be a traditional meditative posture with legs crossed, sitting on a pillow on the floor, or you can simply sit on a couch or chair with your feet on the floor. Keep your spine as erect as possible, even if this requires you to place a small pillow behind the small of your back. Next, while the music is playing, start to become aware of your breathing. Allow it to slow down gradually. As you inhale through your nose try to focus on breathing into your abdomen, feeling it rise and fall with each breath. Next, allow your focus to rest on the sounds of the music. Let it move you, and take you deeper. Feel your breath slow even further as you gently into a state of deep relaxation and meditation.

TRACK 2: OUTER WORLD
In the GAMMA brainwave studies, the Tibetan monks meditated on the concept of “loving compassion.” No audio program can take the place of years of meditative practice, but this track can help you connect with that same meditative state of a deeper connection with humanity. This state is also associated with enhanced mental clarity, heightened perception, and seeing the challenges of your life in a larger perspective.

Listen while you meditate, or use the following visualization exercise to deepen your experience and work on a specific issue.
Prepare as you did for the meditation in track one. Feel your belly expand with each inhale and fall with each exhale. Feel your breath slowing down more as you move gently into a state of deep relaxation. Next visualize an image of a person or problem that challenges you. Visualize the physical place in which you encounter that person or problem and simply observe the place, person or problem, without judgment. Imagine a golden light surround and permeating you and all you see. Imagine that this light is filled with an emotion of compassion and understanding. Now move outside that place and view it from the surrounding environment, again allowing the compassion-filled golden light to surround and permeate all you see. Continue moving outward and view it from the edge of the Earth, and then from the deep endlessness of space. Rest in this golden light of compassion and understanding. Breath deeply, trusting that your deeper wisdom will give you the answers and insight that you need.
Listening to the Gamma Meditation System as part of a regular meditative practice will help you train your brain to go to the GAMMA mind state. Once there you can draw upon your capacities for deepened compassion, mental clarity, and heightened self-awareness.

No discussion of the aging process would be complete without talking about DHEA, Total Health Breakthroughs’ Melanie Segala tells me. It’s the “mother” hormone — a building block of estrogen and testosterone. And it has remarkable anti-aging properties, preventing such signs of aging as excess body fat, thinning skin, and graying hair. Natural production of DHEA peaks in your 30s. Then it declines at the rate of about 2 percent per year. But age is not the only factor here. Stress can cause your DHEA levels to plummet. Stress boosts your body’s output of cortisol, Melanie explains, and that interferes with the production of DHEA. Low DHEA levels can leave you open to chronic inflammation, depression, cognitive decline, and an increased risk of cancer. It’s also a factor in weakening bones. So it’s a good idea to have your levels checked by your doctor. (It’s done with a saliva or blood test.) If you’re low, you can take a natural DHEA supplement that can be purchased over the counter. Your doctor will advise you on the dosage. In 2003, Merck introduced a new drug called MK-869. It was designed to have a feel-good effect by tinkering with the nervous system. Early trials were very positive. Company executives and investors were excited. Then Phase II testing began. The drug was tested against a control group taking a placebo. Many test subjects taking MK-869 reported reductions in anxiety. But nearly the same number of people in the placebo group had the same positive response. Further testing confirmed that there was no difference between the experimental drug and a placebo. MK-869 was shelved. The case of MK-869 is far from unique.

The case of MK-869 is far from unique. In recent years, more drugs than ever before are being pulled from clinical trials because they can’t outperform placebos. Even billion-dollar moneymakers like Prozac are failing the test.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Drug developers are saying that it’s not that the meds are ineffective — it’s that the placebo effect is getting stronger. And because it is getting stronger, they believe they should be able to sell their drugs even though they can’t beat sugar pills.

They are spending millions of dollars trying to convince the FDA that their ridiculous theory is valid.

There are two lessons to be drawn from this:

1. Big Pharma is not interested in the effectiveness of its drugs. It’s interested in having the “right” to sell them.

2. Placebos do work. They don’t work all the time. But they often work at the same rate as expensive drugs. Why is this? Probably because they trigger the brain to activate the body’s own therapeutic mechanisms.

That is why it is so important to treat illness holistically — with a mind-body approach. And why, if you have a choice, it is always better to try natural remedies before taking drugs.

Taking care of your skin from the inside with a healthy diet is far more important than using the most expensive anti-aging products. Vitamin C, for example, helps build collagen, says Melanie. That’s the connective protein that makes up 75 percent of skin. And as you age, you lose collagen. That’s one way you get wrinkles. But you can help replenish lost collagen by eating vitamin C-rich foods. Strawberries, red peppers, citrus fruits, and tomatoes are just a few. But, as Total Health Breakthroughs Editor Melanie Segala points out, sunscreen is not the solution. Sunscreen is chock full of industrial chemicals that can cause Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s when inhaled. Melanie says a three-year study is planned to find out if they cause the same brain damage when absorbed by the skin. But I don’t plan to wait for the results. And neither should you. Follow the advice of Dr. Sears and Jon Herring. In their book Your Best Health Under the Sun, they recommend using natural “sun blocks” — shade, clothing, and umbrellas.

If you need more protection, go with zinc oxide. It blocks the sun physically instead of chemically.

Accuray has gotten a fair amount of attention from investors and from investment newsletters, in part because of the spectacular success of the “kind of similar” robotic medicine company Intuitive Surgical. I’ve owned shares of both companies in the past, but currently hold only Accuray shares, and at a signficant loss. Intuitive Surgical makes the da Vinci, which is a surgical robot that allows for minimally invasive, more precise (many argue) laparascopic-like surgery through small incisions. Accuray makes the CyberKnife, which is a robotically-controlled radiation machine that offers extremely precise, motion-tracking radiation treatment for various tumors.

One of the major links between the two companies, aside from the fact that they’re both makers of medical robots, broadly defined, is that prostate cancer, the biggest market for da Vinci surgeries, is also a possible huge market for CyberKnife radiosurgery, so they may end up being in direct competition.

CyberKnife is primarily used for a few different cancers right now, particularly those where the surrounding tissue is very sensitive or where surgery is either very risky or impossible — their big markets so far seem to be prostate cancer, brain cancer, and lung cancer. And while brain tumors have been a traditional target of what they call radiosurgery (very precise application of radiation), that was in part because brain tumors don’t move as much as others, and the skull can be immobilized nicely to make sure the aim of the devise is precise enough. The CyberKnife’s claim to fame is that it doesn’t need the tumor to be immobilized, it targets the tumor extremely precisely and uses a robotic arm to follow the movement of the tumor and make sure the right dosage is applied at the right place. That’s part of what seems to make it appealing for lung cancer, for example, since if you keep the lungs from moving for too long the cancer becomes a moot point.

And they compete not just with chemotherapy and other treatments, and with surgery (whether robotic or traditional), but also with other radiation-delivery devices. There are several companies offering innovation in radiosurgery (including Varian Medical, to name one publicly traded competitor), though they may or may not be as promising — and it does appear that the CyberKnife, at least according to the company, is by far the most widely used radiosurgery device, at least for extracranial tumors (that is, any tumors except those in the brain). Clearly there’s huge potential for better treatments in lung cancer and prostate cancer, since those are very high volume cancers that affect huge numbers of people, so if this treatment catches on as “mainstream” perhaps it will bring big bucks for Accuray.

But as I’ve said, I own shares in this one and I’m probably quite biased — it’s not a sure thing, as could be clearly shown by a look at the stock chart (steadily down from $30 or so when they made their IPO two years ago to the current price around $5). And the newsletters have touted it just as breathlessly as they do today in the $20s and in the teens, so there may not be any rush or any magic to the current price point. I’m no expert on the clinical development of the CyberKnife, though it appears that it’s still gaining usage in various different cancers, but one of the main problems with the machine, during these extremely trying financial times, is its massive cost. Even the da Vinci is selling at a bit less volume than we might expect thanks to fact that some hospitals aren’t able to raise the money to buy these showpiece machines, and the CyberKnife is much less mainstream (so far) and several times more expensive.

Analysts keep predicting that the company is on the verge of selling enough systems to become steadily profitable, and the company has been unable to break over that level of sales just yet — they are consistently on the verge of profitability, earning a couple cents or losing a couple cents each quarter, and they have plenty of cash still left from their IPO and no long term debt, so they don’t seem to be in any kind of distress … but they do certainly need to ramp up sales in the coming years. The expectation is that once they’re able to push sales a a bit higher, their profitability could grow very quickly as the big fixed costs of designing and manufacturing these expensive machines are absorbed by a bigger sales number. Currently the forward PE ratio is at about 31, and analysts expect the company to grow at least 30% a year … but with lumpy sales figures that could easily be pushed way up or down by just a few CyberKnife sales it’s notoriously difficult to make those estimates — a year and a half ago they were predicting forward earnings of 60 cents and a forward PE of 20, but the 60 cents didn’t appear as scheduled.

So … I still like the long term potential and am willing to leave my bet laying on the table for this speculative stock, but I have no idea what’s going to happen in the coming months, or if the current price represents a bargain. They currently have a big backlog of orders, close to $600 million, and only about 25% of that backlog represents “contingent” orders (which, as I understand it, means something like “the buyer has to raise the money first”) — and about half of that backlog represents potential recurring, high margin services (training, maintenance, attachments, etc.), and the installed base of systems — which is the real key to underlying growth and future profitability — does continue to grow, though growth has tailed off slightly in recent quarters. There are about 150 CyberKnife systems currently in use around the world.

Do your own research on this one of course, as always — and let us know what you think.

Let’s pretend that the diagram below belongs to you—that this is the shape of the all-important mindset that defines your general BrainMap Profile—and that it depicts how your brain thinks (even though it is only a sample of the many “maps” you’ll be getting). With the very first “map” served up by your online BrainMap profile, you are going to find that your new understanding is already delivering new ideas on how to get more things done more smoothly, efficiently and effectively—that is, with greater results, more efficiently delivered!

This sample graphic from the online BrainMap shows one user’s working profile. Your BrainMap profile may be similar to this or very different, but it will go a long way toward answering the question, “My brain says I’m WHO?”

Why is this question so important? Because when it is asked to start making changes in its basic mindset, your brain expects one thing above all else: to be in charge. So nothing is more important at the start of any serious self-improvement, self-development, self-help effort involving major self-change than establishing a quality dialogue between your brain and yourself about who your brain really thinks you are! (After all, this is the basic mindset that is so all-controlling and all-directing when it comes time to change your thinking skills!)

And finding a viable way to get your brain involved in challenging or changing its own patterns, assumptions and behaviors is a made-to-order assignment for The BrainMap.

Using The BrainMap, you can invite your brain to be involved in all your efforts to do something different, something more, something greater—to move to the next level of your personal capability—and to do it without delay!

When you take The BrainMap online, you are immediately provided with a wealth of new self-knowledge that neither you nor your brain can afford to ignore when you are seeking to change your mindset. You’ll learn:

* How your brain really sees you
* Why a lot of what happens around you isn’t visible to you
* How your brain can entrap you in a continuous, self-defeating cycle of behaviors
* What your options for changing yourself are
* How you can intervene in what your brain is planning for you
* How your brain is likely to behave when it acts “out of character”
* Why your brain steers you toward some activities and payoffs and away from others
* How to trouble-shoot when your brain fails to deliver the results you need
* How your brain prefers to learn—and how it sometimes refused to do so

And that’s only for starters! There’s so much more to evaluate and act on when The BrainMap is finished searching out and narrating who and what your brain really thinks you are.

What makes The BrainMap so different?

For one thing, data from actual surgical procedures—that is, the right brain, left brain and the front brain, back brain surgeries—define and support the entire BrainMap model!

And what makes this brain test so productive?

It’s remarkable ability to put you in touch with the levers of your mind needed to change something that started to be put in place even before you were born: your basic mindset for observing and dealing with the world!

When The BrainMap is on the scene, your mind knows it is being asked the right questions about how to change your brain. And you know you are getting the brain change, brain training and life planning answers you need. You wouldn’t expect any less of what we’ve come to describe as the world’s only authentic “Total-Brain Interpretation, Prediction and Self-Improvement Guide.” We think you are going to agree with us that The BrainMap is the most important roadmap to self-growth and increasing your brain power available on the planet!

It has nothing to do with green tea, acai berry juice, or the Master Cleanse. Instead, the secret to fat loss is a state of mind. And once you’re in that state of mind, you can’t fail.

Here it is: “When you accept how HARD it is to lose fat, it becomes easy.”

It’s like saving money. When you accept how much discipline it requires to save money, it becomes second nature to put aside a few dollars each month. You understand the difficulty, but do it automatically.

It’s the same with fat loss. When you accept the fact that you must plan, shop, and prepare your meals in advance… do three high-intensity workouts per week… keep yourself active the other four days of the week and keep your butt off the couch… develop rituals that help you avoid nighttime eating… take the time to set goals and plan solutions for every obstacle that might get in your way… fat loss becomes second nature to you.
